Transport Wheelchairs

Transport Wheelchairs (AKA: "Transport Chairs")

Picture
Transport Wheelchairs are lightweight chairs with four small wheels opposed to the two large and two small wheel designs of standard manual wheelchairs. Transport chairs usually fold-up, allowing for the chairs to be transported quickly and easily. These generally smaller wheelchairs are specially designed to serve as an effective and convenient mobility device for patients outside of the home or in traditional medical settings such as doctors' offices, hospitals and physical rehabilitation clinics.

How Are Transport Chairs Different From Regular Wheelchairs?

One of the primary differences between a
transport wheelchair and more traditional models is that transport chairs are designed to be pushed from behind by a caregiver, as opposed to being propelled by the occupant of the chair. With traditional models, the chair's occupant would have the ability to spin the two large wheels, thereby propelling the chair forward, or turning only one of the two large wheels for the purpose of rotating the chair to the right or left. Since there are no large wheels on a transport chair - only the four small ones - the chair must be pushed by an individual other than the one seated in the chair.

Transport wheelchairs are made by a variety of different manufacturers including the following (in no particular order):
  • Drive Medical
  • Invacare
  • Medline
  • Nova
  • Sunrise Medical
  • Duro-Med

Where Can I Buy A Transport Wheelchair?

These lightweight and compact wheelchairs can be obtained from durable medical equipment stores and medical mobility device dealers. There are also a number of online vendors through which one can obtain the item.

Are Transport Chairs Covered By Medicare, Insurance?

Unfortunately, transport chairs are not covered by Medicare. Most health insurance providers use Medicare guidelines in determining which items for which they will reimburse, as well as for the amount of the reimbursement. Since the chairs are most commonly used in clinical settings, and since they are not covered by Medicare, most insurers don't cover the items for personal usage.

Are They Expensive?

No. Brand new transport chairs from reputable manufacturers like Invacare and Medline can be obtained for as little as $149 online.

Which Colors Are They Available In?

Transport chairs come in a variety of different colors, with blue, black and burgundy being among the most common.
